It does seem to match the below coat of arms of descendants of Thomas Glisson of England which includes Dr. Francis Glisson.

It is believed that most Glissons in America are descendants of this family.  According to Burke’s General Armory the arms or shield is as follows: “Sa. on a bend ar. Three mullets pierced gu.”  When translated the Arms description is:  “Black, a silver diagonal band with 3 red stars with holes in them.”  The surname Glisson appears to be occupational in orgin, and is believed to be associated with the English, meaning, “one who made glittering garments”

Notes on the various different spellings of Glisson in England.

The following are what I believe to be ancestors of Glissons with different spellings in certain areas of England at certain timeframes.

County of Suffolk

14th century Glisn

15th century Gleson, Glysene, Glesene, Glesen, Glesyn, Glesoun,

16th Gleson, Glesyn

17th

County of Northumberland

16th century Gleson

County of Norfolk

17th century Gleson

17th century Glisson, Gleson

County of Gloucester

17th century Gleson, Glysson

County of Dorset

16th century Gleson

17th century Glisson, Gliffon, Glifson

Children and grandchildren of Walter Glisson of Bristol seem to be the first to use the spelling of Glisson, his sons Israel and William used both Gleson & Glisson but his grandchildren all seem to have used the spelling of Glisson.  Walters descendants lived in Somersetshire, Gloucestershire and Dorsetshire.  Walters father Thomas may have used the spelling of Glesyn in the county of  Suffolk as did ones older than him.  The coat of arms is that of Dr. Francis Glisson grandson of Walter who went by Glisson.  My conclusion at the moment is that the name Glisson originated with this group and before that it was the above spellings.

I do believe that the spelling Gleason and Gleeson are a completely different family.  The oldest of these spellings seem to be mid 1500’s and they were descendants of Leeson, Leason families.

Also there are different spellings in Ireland and Scotland and even other countries.  All Glisson spellings, all Gleason spellings and Glisan and Glissene, Glissane, Glyssene, Glyssane, O’Glissene, O’glisson, etc.

We see many different spelling in America.  Sometimes its hard to determine if it is from the Glisson family or the Gleason family.  So in doing genealogy research we need to open minded about spellings we run across.  If it sounds like Glisson or Gleason it still could be from either group.  Only when connected to other families do we really know which family they belong to.

Origin of Glisson may be spelling of Glesyn.

Ref:   Family Name History for Glisson from the Historical Research center which I purchased as a plaque and also purchased the coat of Arms on a nice plaque:

Glisson

The English surname Glisson, a variant of Glason and Glasson, is local in origin, being one of those surnames derived from the place where a man once lived or held land.  In this case, the surname means simply “of Glasson” which is ultimately derived from an Old English term meaning “bright or shining spot” referring to the place name Glasson in Lancashire or the name may be derived from Old English meaning “green/blue river” and referring to the place name Glasson in Cumberland in northern England.  This would indicate that the original bearer of the surname may have originally hailed from one of these two places in medieval times.  The name may also be of patranymic nickname origin which is to say it is derived from a nickname applied to the father of the intial bearer of the name, as a surname.  In this instance, the surname Glisson refers to the “son of Glaz”.  The later is derived from a Breton term meaning “grey-haired”

References to this name date back in the fourteenth century when we read of one Richard Glazoun recorded in the Assises of Northumberland between 1314 and 1316.  John Glasyn, Thomas Glasien and John Glasyn son of Thomas Glayson were recorded in Yorkshire in 1435, 1501, 1545 repectively.  We also read of one Francis Glisson who was born in Rampisham, Dorset in 1597.  Sixteenth century records document the christening of Bridget Glisson, daughter of Nicholas and Mary Glisson in St. Mary Whitechapel, Skepney, London, on the 11th of January 1623.  George Glisson married Mary Hosskines in High Wycombe, Buckingham, in May 1652.  The marriage of Charles Glisson and Mary Chapman took place in Whtgift, Yorkshire, on the 11th of November 1714.  The arms described below are those of the Glisson family of Rampisham, Dorset.

Blazon of Arms:          Sable, on a bend argent, three mullets pierced gules.

Translation:     Then mullet signifies Honour and Achievement.  Sable (black) symbolizes Saturn and denotes Constancy.

Crest:               A lion rampant or,

Origin:             England

(my notes:  at the moment I do not believe above is accurate.  As you will see in the following references that I have found myself that date about the same time as above.  Below are other spelling variants of Glisson in different places and dates.  Mostly in county of Suffolk.  I believe we will find many answers in records from county of Suffolk 1300-1600  to take the Glisson line back further than Walter’s father Thomas b.abt 1505 in county of Suffolk.  Also I do not think Thomas ever left county of Suffolk.  I think Walter was born in Suffolk and left there as a single man and went by himself to Bristol in Gloucester/Somerset Counties met his wife Joan Cooke there.    )

PORTRAITS, Catalogue Ref. Portrait, Creators: Royal College of Physcians

File-  Francis Glisson 1597-1677 F. 1635 – ref. Portrait/X379 – date: c.1670

(from administrative History) Francis Glisson was born in Dorset.  He graduated M.D. at Cambridge in 1634 and was appointed Regius professor of physic there in 1636, an office which he held until he died.  He remained in Cambridge for some years, but during the civil wars he practiced in Colchester with great reputation.  Shortly after this he seems to have moved to London; he was certainly resident there in 1650 and thereafter he took an active part in the affairs of the College.

(from administrative History) Glisson was one of the illustrious few who instituted weekly meetings in London to promote inquires into natural and experimental philosophy, from which, after the Restoration, the Royal Society came into being, Glisson of course being a member.  He was one of the early English anatomists who were inspired by the great example of Harvey.

(from administrative History) Glisson’s first work was De Rachitide, seu Morbo Puerili, published in 1650.  His next work, De Hepate, was published in 1654 and this account of the cellular envelope of the vena porta was so much more accurate than any which had previously been published that his name became inseparably connected with it, under the disignation “Glisson’s capsule”.  Glisson’s third work, Tractatus de Natura Sub-stantiae Energetica, seu de, Vita Naturae was published in 1672.  Though it is in a system and manner now obsolete, it deserves admiration as an extraordinary effort of understanding by a man of advanced age.  His last work, De Ventriculo et Intestinis, appeared in the year of his death.

Portrait:  Head and shoulders, thick brown wig, white bands, grizzied eyebrows, dary grey eyes, black doublet, black gown, plain dark brown background, inscribed in yellow letters: Franciscus, Glisson M.D.

File-  Daniel Whistler 1619-1684 F. 1649 P. 1683 – ref. Portrait/X133 – date c. 1660/70

(from administrative History) Daniel Whistler was born in Walthamstow.  He took his first degree at Merton College, Oxford, in arts and then turned to medicine, which his college allowed him to study at Leyden.  In his dissertation for the M.D. degree, delivered at Leyden in 1645, Whistler gave the first printed description of rickets, five years before the better known account of Francis Glisson was published.

Loxton Cavern

There is often confusion between the lost cave and the cave known today asLoxtonCave. However, there are two caves known to exist on Loxton Hill, the second, quite different, site being the lost cave - Loxton Cavern. The cave was famed in its day for its copper stained formations. For the record the lost cave was first recorded by Alexander Catcott in 1757. (note 78) The second, that open today, was found by quarrying in 1862 and its discovery was widely reported in the local press; it bears no resemblance to the lost site. The lost cave was found by miners associated with William Glisson of Loxton and who accompanied Catcott on his visit on May 19th, 1757. An outline description of the cave is to be found in Catcott's Diaries The cave was still accessible as late as 1794 when C.I.H. [name unknown] made a descent. His account of experiences and an outline description of the cave was published in the Gentleman's Magazine. (note 79) Accompanied by the farmer on whose land the cave entrance lay C.I.H met the guide who cleared the brambles spanning over the entrance. Once done and a rope belayed to a stake, the party commenced the descent.

... Our guide (whose father was the discoverer of the cave about fifty years ago) went in first; and, as I had been told there was no difficulty or danger, I readily followed; and, having slid down a steep slope for about six yards, found myself at the mouth of a very awkward black-looking pit, down which I was to swing by means of the rope. I got down a few yards more, where, fixing my feet in the crevices of the rock, I stood astride the gulph; and there I thought I must have given up the scheme. I could see nothing but a dark chasm, which appeared to be bottomless .... [At the bottom of the shaft] we then lighted our candles, and followed the guide, who carried us along an narrow passage towards the West. The sides of the rock were here covered with beautiful stalactites, very similar to what I have seen in a cavern at a village inItaly called Palo, near Folingo, but much more delicate. Having explored the passage for some yards, we turned aside into a small chasm, just large enough to admit my body with a great deal of squeezing, and which, as we advanced, did not permit me to go on all fours. I was obliged to crawl like a snake, and could not have proceeded much further, as I found my breath getting short from the fatigue and heat of the place; but was at last relieved by reaching a large arched room most beautifully covered with sparry incrustations. The rock (a limestone) was so hard, that our tools were unequal to procure me the specimens I wanted, and I was sorry to find those we saw had been much defaced by Cornish miners, who, in trying for copper a few years ago broke off the finest pieces to send to their friends. For the satisfaction of your readers, who delight in the Quixotic and marvellous, let me assure them, that I here saw the Magician of the Cave, in the form of a bat, clinging to the cieling [sic] of his crystal palace. That our return might be prosperous, I would not suffer him to be disturbed .

... Our descent was difficult; our return neither arduous nor dangerous; perils once known are half conquered. However, I made a firm resolution never to make another attempt to explore the place, in which I was joined most heartily by the farmer, who by no means liked crawling ten fathoms underground. we visited the other branches, diverging in different directions from the main shaft; they contained petrifications more or less beautiful, and of different colours, as tinged with iron or copper, of both which there are veins in the cave.

Having been buried alive for more than two hours, I was glad to revisit the regions of mortality, though completely bruised and battered in every part of my body.

Rutter's account is based on a transcription of Catcott's Diary made by David Williams. From the past tense in the account it would appear the cave was closed at the time of publication of

'Delineations' in 1829. (note 80) Neither Williams nor Beard are known to have visited the site.

Sandford Bone Fissure

This site was opened by William Beard of Banwell on 29th January, 1838, having been, no doubt, prompted by the knowledge that bones had been found there in the 1770s.

Beard had his men, Robert Brown and William Cuff, working for him removing bone material until the 29th May, 1838. For this they were paid 1I6d. a day (7Y2p). (note 81) The site was still open in 1863 at the time of James Parker's visit.

There are many trenches and mined features along the plane of Sandford Hill that it would be difficult to identify the actual pit, many of which were worked as late as the mid-20th century. Some persons claim to have identified the site but this is far from proven.

Ref#DD\X\BART/6 Title: Deeds for Marsh Farm, Yeovil

Description:  Deeds relating to lands around Marsh, Yeovil.

A mortgage for L300 in 1738 is concerned with 16 acres of arable land formerely known as Marsh Close, 4 acres of land known as Smoke Acre and a close of land called Hyde containing 7 acres.  The parties were Edward

Bullock of Yeovil, butcher, John Bullock of East Coker, sailclothweaver and George Bullock of Yeovil, linen draper.  In 1738 these same lands were leased for 5 shillings, the parties being, in addition to the Bullocks, Richard

Cayne of Stallbridge, hosier and his wife Elizabeth, Ann Everton of Crewkern, spinster and Mary Everton of Crewkern, spinster.

In 1758 John Wright of Yeovil, malster and Richard Wright of Winbourne Minster, malster and Samuel Glisson of Beaminster, Dorset, gentleman, signed a lease for a year for 5 shillings regarding a messuage, malthouse,

barn, stables, and Outhouses in Kingston, Yeovil, 24 acres of pasture near Marsh, Green Moore 2 acres and 3 acres of pasture ground in Perry Thorne.  A release in fee of L500 regarding a marriage settlement and involving

the same Parties and lands followed afterwards.

In his probate will of 1779, Edward Bullock left all his lands to his son, Thomas Bullock.

In 1783 and 1790, Mary Wright of Yeovil, widow of John Wright drew up appointments for her son, John Wright of Yeovil.  The first document mentions the lands outlined above and the second concentrates on the 18 acres

Known as Summer Leaze and Little Mead, which included a dwellinghouse, garden and orchard.

(my notes:  this goes on for many pages concerning the above lands.  Also, significance of above is that it shows Samuel Glisson still of Beaminster, Dorset in 1758 and Mary Glisson m. John Wright in Yeovil 30 Oct 1758.

Mary Glisson was dau of Robert Glisson & Elizabeth Betty Suter. Her marriage was witnessed by Samuel Glisson & William Wright.  So Samuel Glisson of Yeovil, m. in Beaminster 1756 lived in Beaminster in 1758

was connected to Robert Glisson family. I believe after death of Grace, Samuel Glisson wife in 1765 in Beaminster that Samuel then removed back to Yeovil and he is the Samuel Glisson of Brimsmore who left will 1781

proved 1785  )

Ref#                            Title: Marriage Settlement of Samuel Glisson of Yeovil, Gentleman and Grace Gerrard of Beaminster, spinster

Messuage, backside and garden in Yeovil, Penn Close, 2 closes called Brimsmore, Ashley Close, Larkhill Close and Walronds Close in Pitney and Yeovil, land in Green Moore, newly erected House, outhouses, backsides

Garden near Brimsmore Tree, Brimsmore Close and 11 acres adjoining at Lilswell and acres in Green Moore, all in Yeovil Glisson, Gerrard, Coulthurst, Gundry, Chaffey.  Date: 1756

(my note: It appears that all above land was given to Samuel Glisson as a dowry for marriage to Grace Gerrard.  But what this establishes is that Samuel Glisson married in Beaminster, Dorset county but obtained lands in

Yeovil, thus connects later records of Samuel in Yeovil)

Brislington, formerly in Somerset, lies about two miles from Bristol on the road to Bath. The area round the church is still called “the Village” but in antiquity there were hamlets at “the Rock”, “West Town” and “Sandy” and these names are still preserved. Even relatively recently, the majority of us Brislingtononians were either market gardeners, or neuveau riche from

Excerpt from above:

A minor scandal erupted in 1616 when a gentlewoman, Jane SEWARD, claimed she had been pushed off her seat in church, with “great violence” by Joan PHILPOT, the vicar’s wife. She was “much bruised and waxed sorely ill”. The Bishop of Bath & Wells “admonished” Joan, who was required to make a public apology to the injured party. The SEWARDs rubbed it in by bringing their infant Bartholomew to be christened at the same time. Also that year, Thomas IFIELD’s wife Sarah spotted her husband and John GREENE’s wife Mary acting suspiciously under a hayrick and reported them to the Bishop. Thomas protested his innocence with “great vehemence”. They were “discussing the penning of sheep,” he declared. The Bishop ordered Thomas to keep away from Mary in future. Was marital harmony ever restored? IFIELDs (sometimes masquerading as ITHELLS) are found in the parish for many years to come. Youthful indiscretions long in the past, Thomas IFIELD was churchwarden in 1639 and a taxpayer in 1641 when Charles I needed money for his Scottish wars. Those taxed included two women, both widows, Susan SEWARD and Eleanor GLISTON, nee WICKHAM. The GLISTONs also called GLESON or GLISSON were an armorial family from Suffolk, some of whom were doing well for themselves in Bristol.

(my notes:  Eleanor Wickham Glisson widow of William Glisson b. 1595 who was son of Israel Glisson & Marian Gough, and grandson of Walter Glisson & Joan Cooke. Walter Glisson bought the Brislington lands and left it to son Israel who left it to his 2nd wife Alice Burke, William was deceased by 1629 and in Israel will he left it to wife if she remains a widow, which she did. In her will she left it  to their grandson Israel Glisson.William Glisson & Eleanor Wickman parents of Israel b.1620, William b. 1622 and Henry b.1627. Most of the Glisson families in Somerset, and Bristol, and Gloucester are descendants of this couple.  With the exception of those in Yeolviton area in Somerset.  Israel Sr. brother William went to Dorset and was called William Glisson gentleman of Rampisham.  Significance of above is that it establishes the Glisson line as being an Armoral line back at least to Suffolk.  Which would be Walter’s birthplace and where his father Thomas Glisson b.1480-1500 lived.
